“This piece was entirely painted with colored inks - including the soft, colored line art defining the characters and little sea creatures. I really enjoy how a wet-on-wet painting technique can be used to create nice effects and gradients from one color hue to another. Allowing the water form its own patterns on the paper is a fun way to emphasize the underwater setting, and the smoothness of the ink wash works to soften the harsh contrast between light and dark areas, giving the illustration a calm atmosphere despite the dramatic changes in value.”
